SPINEY OYSTER OR SPONDYLUS CALCIFER WITH ROSE QUARTZ INSPIRED IN ARCHEOLOGICAL TREASURES
This superb set is all handcarved by artisans hands in the very rare and almost extincted "Spiney Oyster" or Spondylus Calcifer shell (scientific name). The designs are axes replicas of the exchange money used by the native Ecuadorian Indians Milagro Quevedo living in the coastal tropical lowland 1500 years before the present.
The "money ax" was molded from copper and worked as a money for exchange and commmerce in the Prehispanic Times, the Milagro Quevedo were the makers of the axes, but this "antique money" was found in archeological sites from Peru to Yucatan and Arizona, all over antique American continent.
The Spiney Oyster or Spondylus shell has also a ritual meaning for Indian cultures, even today, you can see spiney oyster art from current native North American Tribes, the material is more expensive than mother of pearl and abalone. You can browse in EBAY and find the spiney oysters, just one shell is sell for 40 dollars and up from respected and serious vendors. For made the perfect axes in this necklace and earrings you need to sacrifice many shells. Necklaces with tiny pieces of spiney oyster mounted on silver are sell by native american indians in 200 dollars and up.
The Spiney Oyster in its 3 varieties ( purple, yellow and orange) have been found in archeological damps and burials, it was also a very valued exchange material in antique America. It supposed to be related with the wealth, the rain, the productivity and abundance in the crops and in the daily life.
The design is my inspiration, My name is Allie Thornton, I got the bachellors degree in Archeology in my country, Ecuador and since then , I have been in love with the spiney oyster and its spiritual meaning for preshispanic cultures. This necklace was made in 2010 and in 2011 the spiney oyster where declared as endangered specie and its capture have been banned. This ins the last work I will present to the world in this material.
The shell " lapidaria" or carving work have been produced by "La Perla designers" in Ecuador, the oyster set is mixed with pink quartz related with love and spirituality. The toggle clasp is sterling silver. This is the perfect set for a special present or just for gift yourself. I will not repeat the same model, you have my warranty you will have a unique set for the generations to come.
I named and signed the work and the set is called : " Antique Money"
